The record

Recorded in the wake of Roach's civil-rights-charged early-60s work, this quartet date pairs him with Mal Waldron's spare, brooding piano and Clifford Jordan's searching tenor for a set of unhurried, conversational post-bop. Eddie Khan's bass anchors a session where the leader's drumming stays melodic and attentive rather than pyrotechnic.
