The record
Before the workshop concept hardened into his signature sound, this quintet-plus date has Macero and Waldron probing loose, semi-composed structures under Mingus's bass. Part chamber experiment, part early sketch of the compositional method he'd later refine.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1956 US Savoy mono, MG 12059. The 1957 UK London copy, LTZ-C 15058, is the more distinctive object -- deep groove, flat edge and a laminated sleeve. A 1962 US repress reuses the same Savoy number without the deep groove, so the catalog number alone will not date a copy for you. Realm reissued it in Britain as RM 211 in 1964.
