A quirky one-off pairing Mingus with Max Roach alongside a working sextet, cut for Prestige just as his Debut label ventures were in full swing. Dense charts and shifting textures from Waldron, Bert, and Barrow show the composer restlessly pushing past hard bop's usual frame.

The album rows here are Candid: the earliest we list is the 1961 US Candid 9021 in stereo, with the mono 8021 alongside it carrying a deep groove. Japanese reissues follow -- SOPC 57011 in 1971, SMJ-6195 in 1977 -- and Candid has returned to it recently, a turquoise Record Store Day pressing in 2022 and a standard 180-gram in 2023. The Prestige numbers on this page belong to a later twofer compilation, not to this record.
