The record
A tenor of tenderness rather than fire, this quartet date pared back the modal reaching of "My Favorite Things" for standards played straight and unhurried. Coltrane's tone here is all breath and restraint -- a reminder that the same horn tearing through sheets of sound could sit this quietly inside a melody.
