The record

A stitched-together Atlantic odds-and-ends set, drawing on sessions with shifting lineups -- Hank Jones and Tyner both on piano duty, Dolphy's flute, Hubbard's trumpet -- that never made it onto the leader's proper LPs. More archival snapshot than statement, it's a useful window into Coltrane's late-'50s ferment between Giant Steps and modal explorations to come.
