The record

A trumpeter fresh out of the Mingus band steps out on his own, backed by a rotating cast that includes Garrison, Haynes, and La Roca across sessions, with Dolphy's flute and Barron's tenor adding sharp color. Recorded in 1961 for Old Town, it's a snapshot of the era's post-hard-bop ferment, loose-limbed and brassy without losing its swing.
