The record

Trio format strips things bare, pairing Mingus with a young Richmond just starting their long musical rapport, plus West Coast pianist Hampton Hawes for an unlikely coastal meeting. Lean and conversational, it puts the leader's melodic bass front and center.

The earliest on file is the 1957 US Jubilee mono, catalogued 1054, with a Canadian JLP 1054 the same year and a Monarch pressing among the US copies. The US and Japanese line stays mono throughout -- JLP 1054 reissues in 1960 and 1966, then UPS-506-J in 1971, YW-7566-RO in 1977 and YS-7088-RO in 1981. No audiophile edition is listed here, so a clean Japanese copy is the practical buy.
