Gunther Schuller's compositions frame Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy within conservatory-trained scoring, Scott LaFaro's bass and Robert DiDomenica's flute adding further texture to the ensemble. A December 1960 document of Atlantic pushing free voices into notated forms.

The earliest on file is a 1961 US Atlantic mono, 1365, an MGM pressing; a stereo SD 1365 and a mono promo are listed the same year, and a Japanese stereo, SMJ-7045 (SAL-7021), also dates to 1961. UK Atlantic split the formats in 1966 as 587043 mono and 588043 stereo. Italian and US mono repressings run through 1968. No audiophile reissue is on file, so condition decides it.
