The record

Dolphy's first date as a leader, cut just after his Prestige-era sideman work, with young Freddie Hubbard already sounding fully formed on trumpet. His alto, bass clarinet, and flute all get room here, laying out the harmonic daring that would define his brief, restless career.

Session personnel

  • Eric Dolphy — alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute
  • George Tucker — bass
  • Roy Haynes — drums
  • Jaki Byard — piano
  • Freddie Hubbard — trumpet
