The record
Two giants of separate generations meet on neutral ground, Coltrane easing into the elder statesman's songbook with unusual tenderness while Ellington's spare comping proves he can swing any rhythm section put in front of him. A quietly radical Impulse! pairing -- Jones and Garrison sitting in alongside Woodyard and Bell -- that lets both leaders' languages coexist without compromise.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file is a 1963 US Impulse! A-30 in mono, gatefold; stereo AS-30 turns up the same year with an RVG stamp. Canadian Sparton copies (A-30 mono, A-30-S stereo) and UK His Master's Voice CLP 1657 mono / CSD 1502 stereo are also 1963. Almost every later pressing is gatefold too, so the sleeve alone will not date a copy -- read the label. Modern choices: Impulse! IMP-166 on 180 gram (1997) and Analogue Productions AIPJ 30 at 45 RPM (2010).
