The record
Cut just before Zawinul joined Cannonball Adderley's band full-time and years before Weather Report, this session shows him deep in soul-jazz mode, riding a stacked rhythm-and-horn lineup through greasy, funk-inflected grooves. Two overlapping bands and rhythm sections give the date a loose, jam-session heat rare for an Atlantic leader session.
