The record
A Prestige-era gathering of Dolphy's most fluent early-'60s sidemen, with Byard's angular comping and Haynes' snap giving him room to leap between alto, bass clarinet, and flute. Dolphy's own vocabulary -- skittering intervals, vocalized cries -- already sounds fully formed here, a bridge between hard bop's discipline and freer terrain ahead.
