The record
Shorter's debut as a Blue Note leader, cut with a rhythm section on loan from Coltrane's quartet and Lee Morgan's brass alongside his tenor. The title track's modal pull and knotty themes hint at the compositional voice he'd soon bring to Miles.

Pressings
Mono and stereo both date to 1964: Blue Note BLP 4173 in mono and BST 84173 in stereo, the stereo being the earliest row on file and carrying a Plastylite ear. The copy to understand is the 1966 BST 84173 with NY/Liberty labels, which still lists an ear alongside an RVG stamp and a laminated sleeve -- a transitional pressing. Later 84173 repressings run through the 1970s. Modern: Music Matters MMBST-84173 at 45 RPM (2010) and on 33 (2017).
