The record
Cut with three-quarters of Coltrane's rhythm section, this date finds Shorter channeling that quartet's modal intensity into his own knottier, more oblique compositions. Tyner's cascading chords and Elvin's churn give the tunes a hypnotic undertow, while Shorter's tenor stays cool and searching above the storm.
