Hancock's comping shades every turn on this quartet date balancing hard-bop swagger against harmonic slipperiness. 'Footprints' got its start here, though the surrounding tunes -- tight and quietly exploratory -- earn their own attention.

Pressings
Both mixes sit at 1967 on US Blue Note: mono BLP 4232 and stereo BST 84232, each carrying an RVG stamp -- though a mono copy without the Van Gelder stamp is listed too, so its absence alone does not make a copy later. Spain took HBN 451-10 in mono and HBNS 451-10 in stereo. Blue Note repressed steadily through 1977, and 1985 brought DMM remasters. Music Matters has cut it repeatedly as MMBST-84232; the 45 RPM edition and the SRX gatefold are the ones to want.
