The record
A vibraphonist's debut-as-leader that reads like a summit of Blue Note's avant-leaning wing -- Andrew Hill's angular comping and Sam Rivers' multi-horn textures push Hutcherson's ringing lines into freer, knottier territory. With Hubbard's brass cutting through Richard Davis and Joe Chambers' elastic pulse, this is 1965 postbop stretched toward the outer edge.

Pressings
Mono and stereo both date to 1965 here, BLP 4198 and BST 84198, and the earliest copies of either carry an RVG stamp, a Plastylite ear and a laminated sleeve. Deep groove shows on both sides of some mono copies and one side of some stereo. Stereo repressings run 1966 through 1977, the Japanese GXK 8024 arrived in 1978, and 180 gram reissues followed in 2013 and 2021.
