Coltrane and Byrd front Garland's blues-drenched comping on this '57 date, stretching out over easy swing from a shifting rhythm section. Two bassists pass through the session, evidence of how fluid personnel could get at Van Gelder's studio.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1962 US Prestige mono, PR 7229 -- the sessions predate the release, so do not expect a 1950s jacket. The stereo of the same number and year carries the RVG stamp; the mono listings do not. Prestige repressed both in 1964, and Japan issued a mono, MJ-7053, in 1963. Modern copies are all later European reissues -- WaxTime 771757, Doxy ACV2011, Spiral 8105266 -- rather than an audiophile cut.
