The record
A Broadway waltz turned modal vamp on soprano, Tyner's rolling piano and Jones's churning cymbals opening space few horn players had thought to explore. The session where the quartet's identity locked into place, still on Atlantic before the move to Impulse!

Contemporary reception
Coltrane’s emergence as a leader on his instrument has not prevented him from moving forward with new ideas. Here he’s at his most melodic on records, stretching out in relaxed mood on three standards and one, the title tune, well on its way to that classification — at least by jazzmen. They are: “Everytime We Say Goodbye,” “Summertime” and “But Not For Me.” Casual and flexible is the Coltrane manner here and he provides a fascinating jazz package in total.
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1961 Atlantic 1361 in mono, an MGM pressing, with a laminated-cover variant of the same catalog number listed beside it; stereo SD 1361 is also 1961. German copies from 1962 carry deep groove labels. US repressings come thick from 1966 onward and reuse both catalog numbers, so a bare 1361 tells you very little on its own. Modern cuts on file are the 2022 Atlantic SD-1361 remaster and the 45rpm Analogue Productions APA 011-45 from 2024.
