The record

Live tapes from the short-lived Dolphy-Coltrane frontline, caught mid-transition as the quartet stretched toward the modal, two-bass explorations that would define the Impulse! years. Dolphy's bass clarinet snarls against Coltrane's soprano on extended workouts, a rare document of two restless improvisers pushing each other in real time.

Session personnel

  • Eric Dolphy — alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute
  • Art Davis — bass
  • Reggie Workman — bass
  • Elvin Jones — drums
  • McCoy Tyner — piano
  • John Coltrane — tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone

Contemporary reception

No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.

Pressings

Nothing on file here predates 2023, so there is no original-era pressing to chase. Impulse! issued it in mono three ways that year: a US gatefold, B0037785-01, an orange-vinyl variant on that same number, and a limited European orange edition, 602455514202. All three are current production. Choose on packaging and vinyl colour rather than rarity, and expect them to be equally easy to find.
