The record
A stacked reed section -- Nelson, Dolphy, Richardson among them -- gives this big-band date its bite, with Jaws' burly tenor cutting through arrangements dense enough to swing and sting at once. Cut for Prestige in 1960, it's a snapshot of hard bop's brass-and-reeds muscle before the decade's freer turns took hold.
