The record
Wayne Shorter's tenor pulls Byrd into looser, more open territory than his earlier sessions allowed, Hancock's harmonies opening fresh space beneath the frontline. Higgins and Warren stay supple throughout, never forcing the music's newfound stretch.

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1966 mono, BLP 4118, with an RVG stamp and a laminated sleeve. The 1966 stereo, BST 84118, comes both on New York labels -- deep groove, RVG stamp, laminated sleeve -- and on Liberty labels with none of that, so the label design is what separates the two. A 1966 mono listed as 84118 in a stereo jacket carries a Plastylite ear. Reissues on BST 84118 run from 1970 onward.
