The record
A sextet outing that layers Fuller's trombone and Spaulding's alto and flute over Hancock, Carter, and Chambers, pushing the writing toward denser, more unsettled harmony than his quartet dates. Recorded in 1967 as Shorter's compositional voice grew increasingly knotty and oblique, right before Miles' rhythm section pulled him deeper into that circle's orbit.
