The record

Ornette Coleman's title theme gets reworked into the group's own classical-leaning voice, piano framing the vibraharp's warmth with patient counterpoint. Brushwork keeps the whole date unhurried.

Session personnel

  • Percy Heath — double bass [bass]
  • Connie Kay — drums
  • John Lewis — piano
  • Milt Jackson — vibraphone [vibraharp]

Pressings

The earliest we list is the 1962 US stereo, Atlantic SD 1381; mono copies carry 1381, though the US mono on file from that year is a promo. Britain took it as London HA-K 8016 in mono, in a laminated sleeve, and SH-K 8016 in stereo, while France issued 332.057 mono and 372 009 stereo. Later come a 1972 SD 1381 reissue, a 1987 Atlantic 90665-1, and a 2016 UK 180-gram remaster of SD 1381.
