Recorded not long after Kay took the drum chair, this date centers on a fugue-built title piece that maps out the group's fugue-and-swing method for years to come. Warm blues phrasing keeps the writing grounded.

This set offers four men possessing an obvious keen awareness of the finer points in today's often involved jazz forms. The Modern Jazz Quartet rely heavily on the subtle, intricate nature of music's classical techniques. The application of this is expertly evident in the Gershwin medley. Milt Jackson on the Vibes is one of the strong guns the Quartet has to offer. Good sound.

Pressings
The earliest copy we list is Prestige's 1955 US mono, LP 7005. An RVG-stamped PRLP 7005 follows in 1957 and a blue-label PRLP 7005 in 1962, both better bets than the many later foreign pressings. Original Jazz Classics reissued it in 1982 as OJC-002, mono in the US and stereo in Germany. Japan's 200 gram mono, UCJO-9010 from 2009, is the best-specified reissue in our data.
