The record

A tight, swinging session from a rhythm section that was simultaneously shaping Miles Davis's first great quintet -- Chambers and Jones lock in behind Drew's crisp, Bud Powell-inflected lines. Riverside caught the pianist at his most confident, balancing bebop drive with the label's ear for clean, uncluttered trio sound.

Session personnel

  • Paul Chambers — bass
  • "Philly" Joe Jones — drums
  • Kenny Drew — piano
