The record

A tight mid-'60s summit of two Detroit-bred hornmen whose big-band partnership -- soon to anchor their own orchestra -- gets stretched out in quintet form here, with Duke Pearson's writing and comping giving Jones and Adams plenty of room to trade ideas. Ron Carter and Mel Lewis keep it loose but exacting, the kind of session where technique never upstages feel.
