The record

A late-'50s Verve summit pairing two of cool jazz's most lyrical horns, Getz's tenor and Baker's trumpet trading unhurried, singing lines over a Chicago rhythm section. Understated and conversational, it's a snapshot of two soloists who needed no showmanship to make their mark.

Session personnel

  • Victor Sproles — bass
  • Marshall Thompson — drums
  • Jodie Christian — piano
  • Stan Getz — tenor saxophone
  • Chet Baker — trumpet

"STAN MEETS CHET"--Stan Getz and Chet Baker--Verve MGV-8263 (1-12" LP) The pairing of the two jazz notables brings forth an interesting sound. Getz' respected tenor sax and Baker's noted trumpet make beautiful music together. Aided by the worthy rhythm backing by Victor Sproles (bass) and Marshall Thompson (drums), the two musicians display their cool school versions of "I'll Remember April", "Autumn In New York", "Jor-Du" etc. Top jazz name value will help sell the deck.

Pressings

The earliest on file is the 1958 US mono, Verve MG V-8263; the period listings here are all mono, so a stereo copy from the era is not something we hold. The UK went out the same year on His Master's Voice CLP 1292, and a 1962 Japanese VL 1053 lists a deep groove. For a modern audiophile copy, Original Recordings Group cut ORG 014 at 45 RPM on 180 gram in 2009.
