The record
Flamenco color and Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez get folded into Gil Evans' arrangements, the trumpet bending long notes against a wall of woodwinds and brass. Nothing here swings in the usual sense -- it broods instead.

Contemporary reception
The third collaboration between Davis and arranger Evans again points up that this is the most successful, consistent and challenging combination practicing modern jazz for both musical and experimentation value. From a distance the album appears to be an elaboration of Davis’ loose “Flamenco Sketches” from his best-selling “Kind Of Blue” album but the presence here of Evans is felt in the complicated harmonics, the superb orchestral backing, in general the entire scope of the album. And Miles comes through for him with an unerring performance of clarity and soul. A great LP.
Pressings
The earliest we list is the 1960 Columbia CL 1480 in mono, with deep groove labels on the copies we hold; plant variants are catalogued separately, so Terre Haute and Hollywood pressings turn up as distinct entries. Stereo CS 8271 is also 1960. The UK went out on Fontana 682 079 TL in a laminated sleeve. For later cuts the file holds Classic Records CS 8271 across 1998 to 2008, and Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-375 in 2013 and again in 2025.
