The record

A Samoan-born singer with a warm, unhurried swing, backed here by a West Coast big-band brain trust -- Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Mel Lewis -- stacked deep enough to include tuba and french horn for extra shading. Reprise's early-60s pop-jazz polish frames Rivers as a singer's singer, closer to Sinatra's easy phrasing than to belting torch style.
