The record
Graettinger's dissonant, classically-schooled charts push Kenton's orchestra into genuinely radical territory -- less big band swing than atonal tone poem, with Ferguson's trumpet and Graas's horn cutting through dense, splintered voicings. A fascinating dead-end of progressive jazz, where ambition outpaces swing entirely.
