Mobley's tenor meets Dorham's brass over the airtight Drew-Chambers-Philly Joe Jones rhythm section, the whole date built on Dorham's own writing and standing as a clean statement of Blue Note's early-'60s house sound.

Contemporary reception
"WHISTLE STOP"--Kenny Dorham--Blue Note 4063 The sweeping, persuasive Dorham trumpet is reunited here with the vigorous charging of Hank Mobley's tenor and together form a striking front line for seven Dorham tunes of somewhat connection. Dorham and Mobley surge through such enthusiastic pieces as "Philly Twist," "Buffalo," "Whistle Stop" and Dorham's "Epitaph" (a one-minute dirge) and get vital assistance from a Philly Joe-Paul Chambers-Kenny Drew rhythm section. It's a neatly tied-up jazz package of tremendous strength.
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1961 US Blue Note mono, BLP 4063, and it carries the full set of markers -- deep groove, RVG stamp, 47 W 63rd address, Plastylite ear, laminated sleeve. A 1966 mono reissue reuses the same number, so read the label address rather than the catalog. Stereo appears as BST 84063 from 1967. Modern cuts: Analogue Productions AP-84063 in 2008, Music Matters MMBST-84063 in 2017.
