The record

Five horns deep and never crowded, this date lets Morgan, Fuller, Donaldson, Coleman, and Brooks pass the blues around while Smith's organ anchors the noise. Burrell and McFadden swap guitar chairs as Blakey and Bailey split time on drums.

Pressings

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1958 mono, BLP 4002, with a deep groove, an RVG stamp, the 47 W 63rd address and a Plastylite ear -- all four together, which is what a buyer is paying for. A 1959 mono of the same number carries the identical set, so the address alone will not settle which copy is earlier. By 1965 and 1966 the ear survives while the deep groove and the address are gone.
