The record
No piano, no organ -- just guitar, bass, and drums, forcing every melody to stand on clean, horn-like phrasing alone. This spare trio format shows why sidemen and leaders alike kept calling on him through the early '60s.

Contemporary reception
Musically mature beyond his years, guitarist Green is one of the very few new guitarists on today’s jazz scene. This makes him even more important. His playing encompasses an earthy warmth and a pleasing melodiousness. He swings in earnest, but is not lost in headlong drive, and he includes a capricious humor in his solos. This is good. Sidemen here include bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey. They play “’Round About Midnight,” “Alone Together” and three others.
Pressings
The 1961 monos are the earliest here, catalogued BLP 4071 and both carrying RVG stamp, Plastylite ear and laminated sleeve -- one with deep groove, one without. A 1962 copy splits the difference, deep groove on side two only. Stereo does not turn up until the 1968 BST 84071 reissue. The two serious modern cuts are Analogue Productions' 45 RPM AP-84071 from 2009 and the Music Matters 180-gram gatefold MMBST-84071 from 2015.
