The record

A sprawling, slow-assembled session that stacks up to six bassists and a rotating cast against Evans's dense reed-and-brass voicings, proof of his orchestral ear working outside the Miles collaborations. Verve gave him room to sketch mood pieces rather than tunes, and the result sits among his most personal, least imitated work.
