The record
A brief window between Coltrane stints found the drummer leading a date stacked with fellow Detroiters, brother Thad on cornet and Hank at the piano among them. Frank Foster and Frank Wess add reed and flute color, giving Riverside's hard-bop house style a loose, conversational swing.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1962 US Riverside RLP-409 in mono; the stereo of the same year runs RLP-9409. Japan took a stereo copy in 1963 as SR-7055 and reissued it in 1977 on SMJ-6192. For a clean playing copy without chasing an early one, the 1986 Original Jazz Classics OJC-259 is the sensible buy and the easiest of these to find in the racks.
