Caught mid-European tour, this edition of the Messengers paired Morgan's blazing trumpet with Shorter's newly arrived tenor voice, Timmons and Merritt driving the hard-bop pulse underneath. A rare glimpse of Blakey's crack unit stretching out live before Shorter's compositional stamp fully reshaped the band's book.
