The record
Two stubborn stylists circle each other here, Mulligan's fat baritone tone carving out unexpected room inside knotted, off-kilter structures. The summit works because neither man softens -- Ware and Wilson hold the floor steady while the two leads argue their separate logics.
Session personnel
- Gerry Mulligan — baritone saxophone
- Wilbur Ware — bass
- Shadow Wilson — drums
- Thelonious Monk — piano
Contemporary reception
This release showcases two prominent members of different jazz schools in Mulligan’s sensitive baritone sax and Monk’s expressive piano. The disk captures the two musicians in an inventive mood that greatly adds to their jazz stature. The artists are expertly assisted by Wilber Ware at bass, and Shadow Wilson on drums. Among the selections portrayed are, “Straight, No Chaser”, (written by Monk), “Sweet And Lovely”, and “Decidedly” (written by Mulligan). Way-out sounds.
Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1957 US Riverside mono, RLP 12-247; stereo did not follow until 1959, as RLP 1106. A 1958 UK London pressing, LTZ-U 15127, is the first non-US copy listed. Original Jazz Classics reissued it as OJC-301 in 1987, and Analogue Productions cut it to a 45 RPM edition, AJAZ 1106, in 2004 -- the audiophile choice.
