The record
George Wein's Storyville label frames a mid-'50s trio session where Paul Chambers and Ed Thigpen -- both still building their names -- push Akiyoshi's Powell-derived phrasing along. Technique and drive that would eventually carry her from Berklee into decades of bandleading.
