The record

Cut in the summer of '56, this date pairs Pepper's alto with Paich's spare, well-placed piano and the quietly locked-in Clark-Capp rhythm section. Small-group and unhurried, it shows Pepper's tone at its most lyrical, ahead of the tougher edge he'd find later.

Session personnel

  • Art Pepper — alto saxophone
  • Buddy Clark — bass
  • Frank Capp — drums
  • Marty Paich — piano
