The record

Cut in late 1953 with the Heath brothers and Kenny Clarke driving the rhythm, this quintet date finds Dorham's trumpet locked in sharp, economical exchanges with Jimmy Heath's reeds before hard bop calcified into formula.

Session personnel

  • Percy Heath — bass
  • Kenny Clarke — drums
  • Walter Bishop, Jr. — piano
  • Jimmy Heath — tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone
  • Kenny Dorham — trumpet

No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.

Pressings

The earliest copy we list is the 1954 US Debut, DLP-9, and it is the only original-era pressing on file. Note that it is a 10-inch, not a 12-inch LP. Japan reissued the title in 1976 as a limited mono, VIJ-5006 M, and Fantasy pressed a French edition in 1984 as 68540. Those two are the realistic copies; no audiophile cut appears in our data.
