The record

A rare glimpse of a Howard University-bred hard bop unit, cut for Riverside just as Andrew White was sharpening the voice he'd later apply to Coltrane transcriptions. Tight ensemble writing and confident young soloists make this a footnote worth digging for in the label's early-'60s run.

Session personnel

  • Andrew White — alto saxophone
  • Walter Booker — bass
  • Carl "Mickey" Newman — drums
  • Harry Killgo — piano
