The record
Given the presence of Bob Gordon, who died in 1955, this is a reissue gathering West Coast dates from jazz's cool-toned mid-'50s heyday, not a 1981 session proper. Cooper leads a rotating cast of Lighthouse-scene regulars -- Manne, Counce, Shank, Roberts among them -- through arrangements that favor unison lines and easy swing over hard bop's heat.
