The record
This 1970 big-band session finds Jones's writing at its most lush, leaning on French horns and Richard Davis's electric bass to widen the orchestra's palette beyond the standard Basie-derived charts. A high point of the Jones-Lewis Orchestra's Blue Note run, with the reed section -- Adams, Farrell, Richardson -- digging into arrangements that reward repeated listening.
