The record

Recorded in 1961 as the Arkestra pushed further past hard bop's edges, this session finds Gilmore's tenor and Allen's alto tangling with Ra's clattering piano and Boykins' elastic bass in service of a title that doesn't oversell it. Craft's reissue restores a document of Ra's early '60s vision, equal parts big-band discipline and cosmic static.
