The record

An early-'60s Kirk date with McDuff's organ pushing the groove hard while the multi-horn arsenal -- tenor, stritch, manzello, even siren -- churns overhead, proof his showmanship never came at the expense of blues feeling. Taylor and Benjamin keep it grounded, letting Kirk's simultaneous-horn conjuring feel less like a trick than a natural extension of the soul-jazz idiom.
