The record

A bassist's date that plays like a horn player's session, with Coltrane and Byrd trading lines over a rhythm section built for swing -- Silver's comping and Philly Joe's brushwork keep it loose and blue-toned throughout. Chambers steps forward as leader but shares the spotlight generously, a quietly important marker of his rise as one of the era's most in-demand sidemen.

Session personnel

  • Paul Chambers — bass
  • "Philly" Joe Jones — drums
  • Kenny Burrell — guitar
  • Horace Silver — piano
  • John Coltrane — tenor saxophone
  • Donald Byrd — trumpet

Pressings

The earliest pressing on file is the 1957 mono BLP 1534, deep groove with an RVG stamp; a 1957 variant adds the 63rd St address and a Plastylite ear, and a 1959 copy carries the 47 W 63rd address. Deep groove alone will not date a copy, since it persists into the 1966 reissue. Analogue Productions cut AP-1534 at 45 RPM in 2009, the most serious modern option listed.
