Broadcast tapes from Pettiford's ambitious big band, its French horns and harp lending unusual color to hard-swinging charts built for the Birdland stage. A deep-bench reed section -- Gryce, Shihab, Richardson -- shows the bassist-cellist's arranging reach beyond his celebrated small-group work.
