The record
Recorded early in her Colpix years, this trio-plus-guitar session moves easily from cabaret to folk to gospel-tinged blues, loose and unhurried. Schackman's guitar winds through the rhythm section, a preview of the boundary-crossing phrasing she'd sharpen later.

Contemporary reception
An unusual vocal style has brought her pop acceptance but Nina Simone has artistic attributes that transcend just uniqueness of sound. She has a quickness of mind that gets right to the heart of the song, a strong feeling for blues and spirituals, and a fertile interpretive mind that can turn (in this LP) an ordinary love song such as “Where Can I Go Without You” into a dramatic experience. Other outstanding examples of her vocal art include “Rags And Old Iron,” “Gin House Blues,” “Work Song” and “Forbidden Fruit.”
Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1961 US Colpix mono CP 419, which appears in both Abbey and Rockaway pressings; the stereo SCP 419 is listed the same year. Britain got it as Pye Jazz NJL.36, with a 1965 UK reissue as PXL 419. Japanese Pye copies from 1968 run as XM-95-Y in a gatefold. For a modern cut, Pure Pleasure Analogue reissued the stereo in 2012 as PPAN SCP 419, gatefold and 180 gram.
