A young Murphy steps out with a West Coast big band stacked with Kenton and Woody Herman alumni -- Rowles, Kamuca, the Candoli brothers -- swinging hard behind his cool, hip baritone. Capitol's early spotlight on the singer, before his phrasing turned darker and more exploratory in the '60s.
