The record
Three altos -- Gryce, McLean, Shihab -- plus Coltrane's tenor crowd this 1956 date, with Waldron pushing past sideman duty into arranger's territory. Barely a year into his Prestige contract, it hints at the compositional reach he'd later bring to Holiday and Mingus.
